But, will things change in the 2008 race2) for the White House3)? Our senior4) political analyst5) Bill Schneider goes to the American people to find out6).
WILLIAM SCHNEIDER, CNN Senior Political Analyst: Is America ready for a woman or an African-American president? We asked, in the latest CNN poll7) by the Opinion Research Corporation8). 60% of voters9) said: a woman president, no problem. How about a black president? A slightly10) higher number, 62%, see no problem with that, either. Can those results be trusted11)? Polls are not always reliable12) when they ask people about prejudice13).
KEATING HOLLAND, CNN Polling Director: Sometimes people will hear a question and give pollsters14) the answer that they think the pollster wants to hear.
SCHNEIDER: The question of “electability15)” may be less about prejudice in general16) and more about this woman and this African-American.
HOLLAND: I think Americans may be thinking about those specific17) people: Hillary Clinton18) and Barack Obama19).
SCHNEIDER: If Senator20) Clinton has too much political baggage21), Senator Obama may not have enough22).
BARACK OBAMA, U.S. Senate Democrat23): It is entirely24) legitimate25) for people to look at26) the body27) of my experience, and the other candidates28)’ experience, and ask tough29) questions.
SCHNEIDER: Like, does either senator have the military experience30) and national security31) credentials32) to be Commander-in-Chief33)? That question didn’t matter as much for Bill Clinton in 1992 or for George W. Bush in 2000. They ran34) in the interwar years35), when the Cold War36) was over37) and the War on Terror38) had not begun. Electability may eventually39) become a problem for both Clinton and Obama, but voters don’t have to make a choice40) yet.
HOLLAND: It’s only when the waiter actually gets to your table that you’ve got to make a real choice. Right now, Americans are just looking at every option41) on the menu.
SCHNEIDER: If he does run, Obama would be the first African-American candidate for president who does not come out of42) the Civil Rights movement43). His appeal44) is not primarily45) racial46).
